Ogilvy Health Community Outreach Day 2019

Another extremely rewarding and humbling Ogilvy Health Community Outreach Day in the books!

Thursday, May 2, 2019, marked our organization’s 5th Annual Ogilvy Health Community Outreach Day, and what a day it was—our employees are still buzzing about the incredible experience. Community Outreach Day is a company-wide initiative that affords everyone who works at the agency the opportunity to give back to the community at large. Employees joined forces with their colleagues to volunteer both time and energy to a number of healthcare-related charities, soup kitchens, food banks, community parks, veterans’ organizations, children’s hospitals, and animal shelters. Want to check out the action for yourself? Head over to our Facebook page to get a behind the scenes look.

Working full-time and being the mother of two extremely active boys under the age of six means I am constantly going full throttle, trying to get it all done. Volunteering tends to fall into the “that would be nice to do if I had more free time” category. Participating in Community Outreach Day allows myself and others to take pause, step away from our day-to-day office responsibilities, and really make a difference in others’ lives.

And as this is my first year co-leading SPIRIT (Ogilvy Health’s employee-led professional network that focuses on fostering employee morale, cultivating agency culture, celebrating employees’, and supporting charitable initiatives), I was fortunate to have the opportunity to help spearhead this wonderful initiative with my partner in crime, Martha Maranzani. I don’t think either of us were fully aware of how much work it would take to pull this event off, but we did not do it alone—we had an army of employees helping us every step of the way. The adage “it takes a village” certainly applied. Community Outreach Day is a shining example of all that can be accomplished when a group of inspired, compassionate, and committed employees band together with an aim to make a difference.

This year’s event was a tremendous success—in all, we had 236 people participate, coming together to help make an impact in local communities by working with 19 preselected, charitable organizations* located throughout the United States.

Through Community Outreach Day, our agency was able to further build upon long-standing relationships with healthcare-related, nonprofit organizations like the NJ Sharing Network (a federally designated organ procurement organization) and the JED Foundation (an emotional health and suicide prevention nonprofit that advocates for teens and young adults). We added several new organizations to our volunteer list this year as well, like Project Linus, where our employees crafted fleece blankets for hospitalized children, and The Red Cross, which gave our volunteers the opportunity to host an indoor carnival for veterans at the Lyons VA Hospital.

For the fifth year in a row, I spent my day volunteering with the Morris County Park Commission, because I love being outside and really enjoy helping to make our local parks cleaner and safer—and, added bonus, it was a great opportunity to sneak in a good workout! This year, about 30 of us spread out mulch at a local park playground and then took to a walking path to cut back overgrown branches that were overtaking the trail. Upon our group’s return to the playground to gather our belongings and call it a day, we found a young dad and his adorable toddler playing on the jungle gym, fully reaping the benefits of our hard work. Talk about ROI! I can’t tell you how good it felt to see the huge smile on that little boy’s face. That image stayed with me all weekend, and it reminded me how lucky I feel knowing that my agency is committed not just to our clients and their brands and the business side of things but to its employees and to helping the communities in which we live. Ogilvy Health gives us this tremendous annual opportunity to take a break from the daily grind, roll up our sleeves, and support so many deserving organizations. It’s really something special.

This event is one that so many of us look forward to because it allows us to spend time with our friends, meet new colleagues with whom we normally might not interact, and make a real difference in our community—together. Events like this help to contribute to the overall culture of our agency and affect OUR lives, not just the lives of those we set out to help by giving back. Not only do we get to be instruments of change but—bonus!—we get to create and build upon partnerships within therapeutic areas that are relevant to the work we do.

I know I am not alone in saying that I can’t wait for next year! Seriously, go check out the pictures and see some of the great work we were able to do. And if this piques your interest, maybe check out the open jobs we have available because, hey, Community Outreach Day 2020 isn’t that far off… #OgilvyHealthGivesBack.
